Commander Timothy Steadman is a native of Mystic, CT and a 1990 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he earned a B.S. in Marine Engineering. His first sea duty assignment was as a member of the pre-commissioning crew of USS HUE CITY (CG-66) from March 1991 to August 1994.
Following his Division Officer tour, he was assigned as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officer’s School, Division Officer Course, in Newport, RI. During this tour he was designated a Master Training Specialist.
Commander Steadman’s department head tours were as the Chief Engineer on USS FORD (FFG-54) in Everett, Washington from November 1997 to November 1999, and Chief Engineer on USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG-62) forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan from January 2000 to December 2001.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval War College in 2003, Commander Steadman served as the Executive Officer in USS LABOON (DDG-58) from June 2003 to October 2004. Immediately following his Executive Officer tour, Commander Steadman reported to Commander, Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-ONE as the Chief Staff Officer until November 2006.
From December 2006 to April 2008, Commander Steadman served as a section head within the Joint Requirements and Acquisition Branch of the OPNAV Staff (N810).
Commander Steadman became the seventh Commanding Officer of USS O’KANE (DDG 77) on 11 November 2008.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, and several unit awards.
